Branded merchandise began in the late 18th century with items like George Washington campaign buttons in 1789, letting supporters display loyalty. In 1886, printer Jasper Meek launched modern promotional products by putting a shoe store’s logo on burlap school bags for kids, kickstarting the giveaway industry. By the 1950s–1980s, logos became status symbols, and people started buying and wearing branded apparel as fashionable statements of identity and aspiration, which continues to this day.
